The 38th Annual Junior America’s Cup will be held July 27th-29th at the Isleta Eagle Golf Course in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Both the Sun Country PGA and the Sun Country Amateur Golf Association will be hosting the event which includes representatives from 17 different associations throughout the western parts of Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

The Junior America’s Cup is a tradition that began in 1959 with representatives from junior golf associations in Mexico, Alberta, and Southern California. The three groups brought five participants each to play in a stroke play team tournament that was unlike any tournament previously available to the junior golfer. The Cup expanded to eleven teams in 1972 with British Columbia, Idaho, Mexico, Nevada, Northern California, Oregon, San Diego, Southern California, Washington and Utah joining. Since 1974 six other junior golf associations have joined the Junior America’s Cup including Arizona, Hawaii, Colorado, the Sun Country, Montana, and finally Wyoming who joined in 2001. The Cup has seen the likes of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples, and Peter Jacobsen play in its annual tournament, and looks forward to the new faces that could someday reach the top of the game.

2010 will mark the second time that New Mexico will host the Junior America’s Cup after a fantastic tournament at Tanoan Country Club in 1993.Both the Sun Country Amateur Golf Association and the Sun Country PGA will be working together to put on this year’s event. The Sun Country Amateur Golf Association was founded in 1976 by a couple of dedicated amateur golfers who quite literally ran tournaments out of the trunk of their car. Since then the Association has grown to accommodate all amateur golfers in New Mexico and Western Texas with tournaments for juniors and adults alike. The Sun Country PGA also works with amateurs in New Mexico and El Paso to provide golf opportunities throughout the area.

This years’ competition will be held at the beautiful Isleta Eagle Golf Course in Albuquerque. Isleta Eagle GC is a 27-hole, public golf course with three distinct nine-hole tracts. Each tract was designed around the natural beauty of the site, giving the course a resort-like character. The three nines—Lakes, Mesa and Arroyo—are centered around a pueblo-style adobe club-house with spectacular views of the golf course and championship practice range. Each nine is a par 36 and any two nines total at least 7,000 yards. The Isleta Eagle Golf Course has hosted such events as the NAIA National Championship, New Mexico Open, LPGA Futures Tour, AJGA and PGA Junior Series and is rated four stars by Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play.”
